Local Activities flourish-favicon

Design of the ON House Residents can access the convenience of several local restaurant options and an increasing number of 5-star hotels conveniently located along Sri Lanka’s southern coast, from Galle to Mirissa. These, as well as the water sports amenities and surfing at Weligama Bay can be booked directly or through the ON Houses manager.

Depending on whether one is enjoying a romantic retreat, a wedding party, or a large family reunion with small children, the top 10 things to do during one’s stay at the ON Houses might include:

SHOPPING & Sightseeing

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a delightful place to wander the streets and shops inside the Fort. 25 minutes away.

Learning to Surf

Weligama Bay is one of the best places to learn to surf, as well as catering to experienced surfers. 5 minutes away by tuk tuk.

Diving, fishing, & CruISING

Adjoining the ON Houses is the Cape Weligama Dive Centre, staffed by European professionals, and the embarkation point for all land and water-based activities. Offering first-rate PADI dive courses and exciting dives in the ON Houses bay, other activities include private cruises, big game fishing, seasonal whale and dolphin-watching trips.

Whale & Dolphin Watching

Boats depart early morning from Mirissa harbour, which is the closest point to the waters frequented by blue whales during the season from November to April. One may see five kinds of whales – blue whale, bryde’s whale, sperm whale, killer whale and pilot whale – and four kinds of dolphins – spinner dolphin, bottle nose dolphin, stripped dolphin and Risso’s dolphin.

Bike-Riding THROUGH the GALLE Countryside

Cycling through the cinnamon plantations is inspiring and very beautiful and can be tailored from a gentle cycle ride suitable for all the family, to more challenging hill climbs for keener cyclists. The classic Paddy Trail, starting at Wijaya beach, lasting 1.5 hours, and only 12km, is the classic, mostly pretty flat, gentle loop. 20 minutes away.

Going on a Safari at Yala National Park

It can be great fun to do an overnight in the park (this is about 2-3 hours away so makes sense to spend the night so you can go out early the next morning to see the animals).

A Rainforest Adventure at Sinharaja Forest Reserve

The last remaining protected rain forest in Sri Lanka. Also, there are rainforests at Hiyare and Kanneliya. 2 hours away.

Visiting Buddhist Temples

If you want to feel the ancient spirit of Buddhist temples, you should visit the amazing temples of Dickwella, Dondra, and Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya. 20 minutes away.

Experiencing a Sea Turtle Farm and Hatchery

There are a handful of places near the ON Houses where one can watch these endangered turtles being grown and, if timing is right, one can have the unique privilege to release a young turtle back to the ocean.
